Hydrate!

To state the obvious: It’s hot out there.

If you waited too long to book a room at the beach and now you’re stuck here for the weekend, don’t sweat it. Here are some ideas for fun out-of-the-sun in the sweltering days ahead:

Play in the water at Hudson River Park’s Pier 25. There are plenty of steel super soakers, jumping fountains and overhead water buckets to douse the whole family.

Listen to Whoopi talk about planets at the Haydn Planetarium. Journey to the Stars is a fantastic space show played in one of the coolest auditoriums in the city — we also mean this literally, they blast the A/C.

Hide out with the penguins at the Central Park Zoo. Lucky for you, penguins need an arctic climate to thrive which makes this a very popular exhibit on hot days. The IMAX theater is another great option for cooling off in 4D — right now they’re showing Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, which even sounds refreshingly chilly.

Eat a scoop (or two) of Blue Marble ice cream. Locations are popping up everywhere — a counter at All Good Things Market, a cart at Smorgasbar by the Seaport, they’re even scooping Blue Marble behind the snack stand at Hudson River Park’s Pier 25. Today it was a tough decision for me between banana cookie crumble, frozen key lime pie and creamy horchata. Sigh…there’s always tomorrow.

Ride the super-fast dragon carousel at Fete Paradiso to catch a nice breeze. While this outdoor French vintage fair is obviously not air-conditioned, you’ll be having so much fun that you won’t even notice the heat — plus there are plenty of shady spots under the trees in Nolan Park.
