Croatia’s Cres island is well known for its lamb — and Bukaleta, a terracotta roofed konoba high up on a hill, is perhaps the best place to try it. They’ll grill it, bread it, roast it on a spit or whip it up alongside gnocci at this family run gem about 3 miles from Cres Town. The al fresco dining room is outfitted with rustic picnic tables draped in red and white gingham and surrounded by lush green gardens. Atop each table you’ll find their house made wine served in traditional bukaletas — Istrian hand-painted earthenware jugs from which the konoba’s name is derived.
